Adrianne Haslet-Davis dances again for the first time since the Boston terrorist attack last year.

When the bombs went off at the Boston Marathon finish line, Adrianne Haslet-Davis lost the lower half of her left leg in the explosion. She’s a ballroom dance teacher, and she assumed she would never dance again. With most prosthetics, she wouldn’t.

But Hugh Herr, of the MIT Media Lab, wanted to find a way to help her. He created a bionic limb specifically for dancers, studying the way they move and adapting the limb to fit their motion. (He explains how he did it here.)

At TED2014, Adrianne danced for the first time since the attack, wearing the bionic limb that Hugh created for her.

Hugh says, “It was 3.5 seconds between the bomb blasts in the Boston terrorist attack. In 3.5 seconds, the criminals and cowards took Adrianne off the dance floor. In 200 days, we put her back. We will not be intimidated, brought down, diminished, conquered or stopped by acts of violence.”

Amen to that, Hugh.

I’ve noticed that quite a few people are going so far as to deny that girls who don’t experience cramps exist. I just have to say that I am one of those people. For me, getting my period isn’t the worst thing in my life. I barely even notice it most of the time. Mostly I feel a little weird in the belly, check myself and realise that I’m bleeding. I slap on a pad and then it’s no big deal. The pad doesn’t feel like a diaper, I don’t get menstrual cramps and I don’t get in a bad mood. Every woman is different, okay? Some women experience intense pain, some none at all, and most fall in between. The way people have fought back with descriptions of how their pain is so bad that they pass out…that just makes me think that something else must be wrong with them. There’s no way that passing out from the pain or not being able to move is normal. I don’t think period pains should be a valid excuse to stay home from school or work unless you have an illness or disorder which somehow exacerbates the pain.

And, reminder! Not all women (or even all people with vaginas) have periods!

ok this is so stupid because a lot of the money churches get (which is donated, they are not a business) goes to charity, and does a hell of a lot more good than going to the government and getting misused and squandered

And WAY MORE goes to paying the salaries of leaders and fixing buildings and other things that the government has no business subsidizing in any way.
